Comcast HD DVR Review

Summary
Heres what i have learned after using a Comcast HD DVR (a Motorola 6412) for a couple months I'm hooked on comcast HDTV. The truth is that i can't help but compare the experience to using a TiVo and while this DVR falls way short of the TiVo experience, it works well enough in the basic sense to keep me using it. It has some bugs, but there aren't many choices if you want your HDTV from anything other than an antenna. I renew my hope for CableCARD support, so that alternate devices could be used.

Introduction
After five years of being a happy TiVo customer (first with standalone units, then with DirecTV units) it was time to finally try out HDTV and to do that meant I had only a couple options in my area: try a cable company HD DVR or a satellite company HD DVR. I'd done the DirecTV thing for the past couple years and their HD offerings were pretty minimal (and required buying a ~$500 box) though they claim they will have the most programming by 2007 when their new satellites are operational. I decided to go with Comcast, since it was simple, cheap, and here right now.

I know I'm a bit behind the times here, the unit from Motorola has been out for over a year and was first covered here two years ago. There are several older posts about it, namely how to transfer content to a mac using firewire that I'll try out later on. At the moment TiVo doesn't offer a HDTV recorder except for the one that DirecTV offers, and they're phasing it out as they deploy new MPEG4 content the HD TiVo unit can't decode.

Is HDTV worth all the fuss?

I've seen HDTV demos for years now and I never really saw anything impressive about it. What I've figured out is that you can't really get a sense for how good HD content is if you're looking at an unfamiliar TV set playing unfamiliar content. The wonder of HD wasn't driven home to me until I saw a TV show I'd been watching for the past year or so in standard definition. It also helped that I looked at standard def content on my low-end plasma TV for a year before getting HD. After everything was set up and I recorded a few familiar HD shows, I got to see what all the fuss is about. HD programs look pretty incredible, especially those with lots of outdoor shots. I was seeing detail I'd never seen before. After having HDTV for a couple months, I've realized that when there's nothing recorded and I start channel surfing, I keep it limited to just the dozen or so HD channels.

Now that plasma and LCD TVs are starting at $1,500 or so, if you've ever wanted to try out HDTV, now is the time to do it.

Some of the good things about the Comcast HD DVR experience

The first good thing about this unit is that it's fairly cheap. You don't have to buy any box and they charge $9.95 a month for the DVR service. That's cheaper than buying a TiVo box and sending TiVo $12.95/month. After turning the unit on, the first thing to jump out was the interface was fairly clean and unobtrusive. The remote is pretty good and did a good job talking to my TV and A/V system, though I couldn't configure the volume to work with just the A/V volume instead of the TV volume.

Recording shows instantly is just one click without the need to confirm and recorded HD shows are perfectly crisp. There are two tuners which can independently record while you watch something else on the hard drive, so conflicts are infrequent, but just in case there is the equivalent of a season pass priority list that the Comcast unit uses for figuring out what to tape when both tuners are already taping something. One nice feature is the 30-second skip, which I use more often than the default ffw/rwd controls. I didn't have to enable a hack or anything, it seemed to just be there when I programmed my Harmony remote.

One other nice feature is that the unit tells you how full it is at all times. Whenever you pull up the recorded shows listing, you can see if the hard drive is 27% full or 77% full and you can remove shows after you've viewed them to get a sense of how much time is left. HD recording takes up a lot of space, so as a result the maximum HD recording time is about 12-14 hours total.

Now, onto the ways this unit could be improved.

Cons About Comcast Hd dvr

Since this unit has been out for over a year, I've heard lots of feedback from readers here and friends that have one. I've heard about lots of software bugs, buggy playback, and mixed reviews of the DVR user interface. I'll break down my biggest problems one by one.
Lag time in the interface
The first bug I noticed was one I heard about: there is a lag between when you push a button, and when something happens. As a result, you get no feedback and you assume that the button push didn't go through, so you push it again. A few moments later, and two or more button pushes get registered by the device and in some instances that cancels what you wanted to do. It's infuriating when this happens.
There is loads of research behind this frustration on my and many other users' behalf -- the only acceptable lag time is very short, and beyond that users start to wonder if their device is functioning properly. TiVo does a great job rectifying this by giving you an audio cue that it received the button push, and TiVo also does a good job of putting up temporary "waiting..." screens. The worst experience with my Comcast box was once while I was fast forwarding some commercials during a football game, only to have the play/ffw buttons not work after the commercials were over. I hit play about ten times while I watched 10 minutes of a crucial game fly past before the commands could "take" and return to normal play. The lag was about 20 seconds where no button push did anything as the box was locked in fast forward mode.

Setting season passes sucks
TiVo does a pretty good job letting you find shows and set passes. As a result, I often tracked 50 or more TV shows. I realized that after two months, I only have season passes set for 8 or 9 shows because the process is such a pain. On a TiVo, you can search pretty easily for shows by surfing around an alphabet and spelling out the name of the show. On the Comcast box, you get five boxes for letters, and they all are set to A. You then have to manually step through the alphabet on each letter to find your show. Pushing "down" 20 times to find "P" takes about 3-5 times as long as simply picking "P" from a grid on a TiVo. The process is such a pain that I rarely set season passes and usually do so from the guide interface, which adds it as an option to the set recording screen.

Since I have so few season passes and I have two tuners, I haven't run into any conflicts yet, so I can't tell if the conflict notification/resolution is any good or if it just drops lower priority shows without telling you first.

Small hard drive, so many missing TiVo features
I'll admit that I'm spoiled. I've had a TiVo with 300Gb of storage in it and I've had a completely hacked DirecTiVo box that I could stream video from and stream music to. The Comcast box ships with a 120Gb hard drive and given that HDTV storage requirements are so high (about 10Gb per hour), the drive is much too small for an active box. I barely record anything and I'm always above 50% full. It'd be nice if they could bump it up to at least 250Gb, as hard drives are still getting cheaper everyday.

I also miss all the great features from TiVo. Stuff like wishlists matching actors, genre, or even show formats, and all the suggested recording features to help find new shows. I miss having a web interface so I could tell what's recorded from the comfort of my computer, before I head into the living room to watch TV. I miss the helpful sounds, the fast guide, and all the other great little parts of TiVo.

Conclusion

Don't get me wrong, the good outweighs the bad but after using a TiVo for so many years, the Comcast box just barely works enough for me to keep using it. If you've never had a DVR before, it'll probably be a great new device. If you've got a HDTV and haven't tried hi def content before, this is a great option.

Thanks to the proprietary nature of business, if you want to record non-over the air HD, at the moment you have to go through a cable or satellite company. Hopefully someday, the cable companies will open up their spec so that software packages like Windows Media Center and hardware like a HD TiVo can record this stuff. TiVo has been saying for a while that in 2006 they'll be launching a TiVo/Comcast box and I'm counting the days until that happens. Given the great HD channels plus a TiVo interface, I think that would be the ultimate package and get me excited about TiVo again.

THere are a couple of differences between comcast and direct tv. Here is a small difference.

Comcast of course uses coaxial cable to reach the customer in the areas they serve. While cable services in the past were somewhat unreliable, the last mile network to every home is actually quite reliable today. On the other hand, Direct TV uses satellite dish technology, which can go out of service during strong storms.

Cable companies like Comcast have also made huge investments in their infrastructure in order to provide video on demand. This is done by holding large amounts of content on centralized servers, just waiting for the customer to access programming at any given time. Direct TV is at a disadvantage here, as their video on demand platform relies on the customer. The subscriber must have their own high speed internet connection in order to access Direct TV on demand.

Now if you are mainly interested in HD content, then here is one place where satellite TV companies like Dish Network have a superior advantage. Direct TV currently offers more than 130 national HD channels, and local HD in over 90 percent of the county. With Comcast, the numbers vary quite a bit because the number of HD channels is dependent on if your particular area has been fully upgraded.

A final consideration is of course the prices that each company is going to charge you. Comcast often bundles their cable TV service along with high speed internet and phone service. These bundles can be a great deal, but the price often rises significantly after the promotion is over. With satellite TV, you can also find discounts for new customers during the first year, then prices revert to the regular price.

Heres a sample of what happened to me when moving from direct tv to comcast cable.

Just an update as to what I ended up doing should anyone want to know in the future. (I'm not trying to bump my post for attention or anything)

So, I decided to drop DTV and go with Comcast. I called DTV on Sunday the 22nd and told them I was going to cancel because I didn't want to pay $200 for the HD-DVR plus $20 for shipment of the reciever and $10 extra/month for HD service when I can get it cheaper with Comcast if I bundle with the their internet.

The DTV rep in their cancellations department offered me $75 off the price of the receiver, but I still found that to be steep, so I said I'd think about it and turned around and called Comcast and ordered their net and HD.

Comcast came out on Tuesday the 24th and installed my HD-DVR and internet. They are coming back out on Thrusday the 26th to rewire 3 of my cable jacks so I get a better signal.

I called DTV last night to cancel and the guy offered me $100 off the HD-DVR, no shipping fee and free HD programming for a year. Needless to say, I hesitated at this offer, but then cancelled anyway. He told me that I can always come back.

Well, I've only had Comcast for 1.5 days and am already wanting to change back to DTV.

To me, DTV's channel lineup makes more sense with how it's arranged, where as Comcast's channels are all willy-nilly and the locals are on completely different channels. I also don't like that I can't program my channels for surfing. If I want to surf, I have to switch between all channels, not just the one's I get or the ones on my favorite list. I can however, hit the "fav" button and it will go to the next favorite channel up but not down. I can also hit the fav button in the guide and see only my favorite channels in the guide. I think this is dumb.

I also started to setup my DVR to record shows and it will only record 1 show at a time. I was told by the tech that only one line has to come in to the reciever and it will split it automatically so I can record 2 shows at once or record one show and watch another. Apparently this is not the case. If I'm wrong and someone can explain this so I can have it tape ER and Private Practice for my wife tomorrow night, I would greatly appreciate it.

So, after they come out and rewire my three jacks for free tomorrow, I am going to call and setup DTV again (as long as I can still get the deal I was offered) and cancel Comcast's TV but I will still keep their internet as it is definately much better than AT&T's DSL.

First off, you will also have to pay additional price for the HD programming and DVR service but it's lumped into a HD/DVR package for like $79 a month I believe. However, you get about 40 more HD channels for the money than you do with Comcast. Plus they are channels you actually watch, including your locals, like ESPN, USA, TNT, Discovery, History, FUEL, TBS, MTV, Cartoon Network, etc etc.

Also, if your dish is installed correctly and has a decent signal strength then it will NOT go out when the wind blows or it's cloudy like these knuckleheads are saying. I've been a subscriber for almost 10 years, live in a T storm area, and I can count on 1 hand the number of times I've lost my signal. It has to be raining EXTREMELY hard, like can't see your hand in front of your face hard, to lose your signal and it comes right back when the rain slacks up in a minute or two.

Thirdly, Comcast customer service is HORRIBLE! I was on hold and cut off for almost 3 hours one night just trying to register a modem and you're lucky if you ever get anyone who speaks English. With DTV I've never been on hold more than a minute and whatever issue I had was resolved in minutes.

I have been pricing the two. My local no name cable company gives so few HD channels...Heck so few standard channels it is like being robed.

So here is the problem. If I am viewing everything correctly. Right now Dish has more HD movie channels. But Direct TV is the only way to get the NFL Sunday ticket. My wife likes movies more and I love my Cowboys. Before the Saints won the Superbowl I wasn't that worried about it. But being in Shreveport, LA I am worried how that is going to effect the games they show. At some point last year the Local fox started having people vote on which to show if the network could only show one. The Saints only one one time and that one wasn't widely advertised. After that the Cowboys won the votes. Again I am worried how the Saints winning the Super bowl is going to effect the vote if they do that again.

You know one think I do like about Direct TV is you can look at how much your bill will be for each month of the 24 month contract before you sign up. But if you want me to take you seriously it is only fair you explain how you feel you were treated poorly. But of course at the end of the day all it boils down to is whether directv or dish cater to YOU. Directv has more for the sports enthusiast whereas Dish caters to the budget minded.

Direct TV will officially launch their on-demand service in the second quarter, so technically is should be out by the end of this month. How will the product compare with the true video-on-demand (VOD) products provided by cable TV companies like Comcast?

A window to look through is the beta testing that has been going on with Direct TV "On-Demand." Ongoing testing by users has been happening since August 2007, and reviews have been split fairly even on the service. Some customer's have found the video-on-demand service to be a great enhancement, while others have disappointed in the service so far.

The original on-demand service that is available from cable operators like Comcast and Time Warner offer the customer the flexibility to pick their remote control and watch shows at their convenience. In some ways on-demand is like a TiVo or a digital video recorder, the end user has control on when they want to view the program. The difference with on-demand however, is that the cable company holds the programming for you rather than the customer recording it on their own device. A centralized group of servers holds the programming for cable customers to access via a programming menu.

Cable companies have thus made the claim that they have more high-definition programming. That claim is debatable, as they are measuring their HD by the number of programs available, not the number of channels. For example, Comcast's Project Infinity HD rollout promises 1000 HD choices by the end of 2008. Cable companies have thus promoted this instead of the actual number of HD channels they have. While Direct TV currently has the lead with 95 national HD channels, cable companies have between 20-60 channels depending on the company and region.

So how will Direct TV compete in the on-demand arena? The company has put into play two different delivery methods in order to reach their customers with this service.

The first method uses the end-users DVR and their high-speed internet connection. The customer connects to their broadband provider, generally cable or DSL. The customers download speed must be faster than 750 kbps, and should be higher to really use the service effectively. Content is downloaded to the DVR, and then the programming can be accessed from there.

The primary obstacle here is that it is not really true Video-On-Demand. If a Direct TV customer wants to watch an "on-demand" program, he has wait for some of the content to download to the DVR before being able to start watching. Some beta testers have reported download times for an entire movie to be between one and four hours based on the customer's connection speed.

The second method Direct TV has formulated involves sending movies and other content directly to the customers DVR. The content would then be stored for subscribers where they can access it at a later time. This method certainly solves the download issues previously referenced, but brings up the issue of how much pushed content will customers accept on their DVR?

While DVR's generally have capacity to hold around 50 hours of HD or 350 hours of standard definition content, that is nowhere near the thousands of hours of programming available via cable. Transmitting the content to the DVR will use up the capacity, and customers are will be very protective of their DVR space. Most Direct TV customers would rather use the space for content they have decided to record, not what Direct TV wants them to watch.

So will Direct TV succeed in matching cable TV's on-demand offerings? Certainly time will give us a better answer. Having to wait to receive what is considered "on-demand" content will not make most Direct TV customers happy.

WARNING! DirectTV SUCKS!!! Worst Customer Service, Run Around in Ordering Pay Per View, Idiotic Policies that don't allow a person to order Movies past a certain time of day, No Way to Take Action against Customer Rep Phoenix Arizona

Ill tell you this whole thing is action packed.

I tried to order a Pay Per View and of course had problems once again! I always have problems with ordering Pay Per Views because Direct TV doesn't have an easy and easy to understand system for ordering Pay Per Views. They allow you to order aMovie at 11:30pm but when you try to view the movie, you can't because the Movie was actually purchased for the Next Day! Who orders a Movie at 11:30pm for the next Day at 11:30pm???? NO ONE!

When you call to cancel the order, they tell you they are doing you a favor by not charging you the customary $5.00 fee associated with using their phone service! Can you believe that? I miss my movie, I have to waste my time to call them to not only find out why my movie purchase didn't go through even though my card was charged, and then I find out I can't even purchase my movie until tomorrow night and they try to make me feel like they are doing ME a favor??? Unbelievable!

I asked to talk to a Manager after the first rep hung up on me for complaining to her and asking her to speak to a manager and the Supervisor (yes, Supervisor because Managers are hands off!) was even worse.

I ask a question and they either refuse to answer your question directly, instead giving you all their stupid policies, and then when you interrupt them to stop them from further wasting you time with useless information, they get all rude and start to accuse you of "not wanting to be helped" Unbelieveable! DirectTV Sucks!!!

The policy, according to the supervisor I talked to is that you cannot order all day tickets at 11:30pm at night! So, even though they allow you to place an order and don't make it obviously clear that your purchase is in fact for Tomorrow! they don't actually allow you to watch the movie at the time their scheduling is showing the movie!

You have to plan ahead to watch a stupid Pay Per View! Geeze! I purchase Pay Per Views BECAUSE I didn't plan ahead! I thought Pay Per View was convenient and allowed you to order movies whenever show times are scheduled! That is NOT the case.

You cannot watch a movie whenever a show time is scheduled. You have to plan in advance to watch a Pay Per View which, in my opinion, makes Pay Per View totally useless for me.

Oh, and complaining about this policy and the rude customer service is totally impossible as well. DirectTV protects their workers from having complaints logged against them by not allowing customers to talk to managers. They have a call center and you never know which call center you will be directed to, thus, you can never have the satisfaction of at least reporting poor customer service.

DirectTV basically markets a product that they refuse to hear complaints about. They make it very difficult for customers to voice their opinion to management. Basically, from what I experienced, DirectTV doesn't care about what customers feel is problematic.

I was told that my complaints were unimportant and that my desire to talk to management was unneccessary. YES! That is what I was told by a Supervisor. When I told this supervisor that I was most likely going to cancel my account, she was VERY rude and said "great, shall I forward you to the cancelation center?"

DirectTV could care or less about their customers. They just want your money and don't want to hear from you at all. If you don't like their service or the rude treatment from their customer service reps, they are VERY willing to HELP you cancel. Basically, they already have your money and are SO arrogant that they think you will not cancel or will come back if you do.

People need to know that DirectTV service sucks and people shouldn't join DirectTV thinking they offer a good service because the service from DirectTV is nothing but a hassle and a run around once you are a paying customer.

Not to try to get you to get cable service but I personally hear these kind of complaints all of the time from ex-satillite customers, infact there are about 642 complaints on this web site alone. If you can get cable in your area I would try it out, first of all if it is like the system that I work for you can get digital cable with Video on Demand which is a service that satillite companies cannot even offer, it allows you to go to a menu and select what ever you want to watch be it a ppv movie or a show that you wanted to see any time that you want to. This means you no longer have to wait on start times to beable to watch a movie. Even if that service is not available in your area you should still be able to get at least digital cable were they start a movie every half hour, and there is not a certain time of day where you wouldn't be able to order a ppv. Know I see why they always get the best in customer service award because the don't document there complaints.

Well hope that what I had to say may help you out with your problem.
